Manly microbrewer pours over historical records to help it create the right drop

International jouster Andrew McKinnon was on hand at 4 Pines recently to assist the microbrewer with a specially designed drop.

The Gruit beer has been created for the forthcoming St Ives Medieval Faire, St Ives Showground, September 20-21.

The beer maker said the style was distinctive by its use of herbs and roots as the bittering agent instead of hops.

Mr McKinnon, of Seaforth, the coordinator of the Medieval Faire, approached the Manly brewer with the view to it making something that would suit the Dark Ages vibe.

“They said I had to be there so they could officially say that this beer was brewed by a knight,” he said.

The ancient recipe also included wheat, rye and spelt. And honey was also added, not only for sweetness but to help create the alcohol.

The beer will be served at a pop-up tavern on the site over the weekend. Also on the site of the showground will be historical medieval villages. “There are going to be Dark Ages areas — a Viking village, and 14th and 15th century towns,” he said.
