Manly Warringah Choir presents J S Bach - The St John Passion. You will be overwhelmed by what an extraordinary piece of work The St John Passion is! There is so much variety of mood, tempo and "attitude", that it sweeps away preconceived notions people may have about J S Bach being "boring".

The St John Passion re creates  the story of the last hours of Jesus Christ’s life, from Gethsemane to Golgotha, as told in the gospel of St John.

Although occurring over 2000 years ago, and the music having been written nearly 300 years ago (in 1724), this work has a very contemporary feel to it. There is love and betrayal, death and destruction, politics and power, mob hysteria;  - plus compassion, indifference and violent cruelty. All told with spellbinding power – in English, so it is easy to follow.

The story is  so dramatically related, it has the vibrancy and immediacy of opera – without the costumes. The chief soloist, Evangelist, narrates the story; other soloists  sing the roles of Jesus, Pilate and Peter.  The choir has two roles: the many choruses are a part of the action and represent different groups of people such as the disciples, the chief priests, the crowds, the soldiers. These choruses are very exuberant. In contrast the choir also sing chorales, which are much quieter and more reflective; they express the commitment of the faithful to their Lord and their passion for his sacrifice. Whether one is a believer in the Christian faith or not, one is drawn into this picture of passion, cruelty and sacrifice.

We are very fortunate to have the renowned tenor Richard Butler singing the role of Evangelist. Richard recently sang this role in Perth, and the performance was broadcast on  ABC FM on Good Friday this year. Much in demand baritone, Alexander Knight will be singing the role of Jesus. There are  five more soloists, all with very fine voices.
