Educational Programs
Q Station Education Programs explore the place, spaces and history of this heritage-listed site and National Park, located on North head and overlooking the magnificent Sydney Harbour. Spanning more than 150 years of Australian history, the 65 original buildings set on 35 hectares of bush land allow us to retrace the steps of those who have gone before to empathetically connect with the place and its many stories. The stunning natural environment serves to remind us that long before the site was used as a Quarantine Station, it is acknowledged that the local Aboriginal people used Car-rang-gel (North Head) as a special place for healing and teaching by the koradgee (wise ones). First contacts between the local Aboriginal people and the First Fleeters took place in nearby coves.
Education Programs at Q Station are designed to provide engaging learning experiences in an ever-evolving, historically and geographically-significant context. Themes of life, death, sickness, health, class, gender, race, hopes and fears come into focus at the Station. Activities are designed to develop critical, creative and reflective thinking skills. Engagement with the natural and built environment, primary sources, artefacts from the heritage collection and stories from the site all provide a rich context for meaning-making across ages, stages and subject areas.
