Whale Beach
Whale Beach is located to the north of Avalon. Whale Beach is 600m long, boarded by two 40m high sandstone headlands and backed by slopes rising to 100m. The beach receives waves averaging 1.6m resulting in an energetic surf zone, dominated by a single bar, which is always cut by three to four rips, including permanent rips against either headland.
Access to Whale Beach is via the winding Whale Beach Road, down a steep decent to the beach front reserve. Park in the large carpark and enjoy a picnic on the large grassy area on the southern rock platform, close to the ocean swimming pool.
At the northern end of the beach, there is a well-known surf break known as the Wedge, which breaks a rock reef off the northern rock platform and provides a good take off, and short but solid left.
