Whale Watching
Whales migrate along the NSW coastline from May through until the end of November.
There are many land based spots along the Northern Beaches that have spectacular views for whale watching. Did you know there are 43 species of whales that travel through the Australia waters, although the most common seen along the Northern Beaches are the humpback and southern right whales.
Best Locations:
North Head, Manly, is a favourite whale-watching destination among whale-watching enthusiasts, locals and visitors. You will also get impressive views from The Barrenjoey Lighthouse headland in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. Pack a picnic and head to the Northern Beaches to get pleasure from the natural and cultural beauty of our National Park, a great base for the family to enjoy swimming, surfing and bushwalking while you watch these extraordinary creatures.
Whale watching tours are available along Manly and the Northern Beaches. Boat tours can be fun and exciting at the same time as informative. Manly Whale Watching tours have a whale spotting guarantee - on all their tours!
Late morning and early afternoon are reasonably good times of the day to whale watch as the glare off the water doesn't make sighting the tell-tale 'blow' too tricky. Early morning can also be a good time as the 'blow' is often highlighted by the back light of the morning sun.
Important information from the NSW Government Environment and Heritage:
Whales require 'personal space', and harassment may severely stress them - possibly causing accidents both for humans and whales if the whales feel threatened. This is especially important in the case of the adults with calves, which may be either resting or suckling. Research has shown that whales are highly sensitive to engine noises. You should also be aware that during the mating season, males competing for females may engage in rough physical contact.
