Whale Beach faces east to the ocean, with Palm Beach to the north and Avalon to the south.
The origin of the name Whale Beach is unknown, although it is presumed to be associated either with the shape of the northern headland, or a beaching of a whale.
From the 1950s, when transport became easier and motor cars more common, the area became a residential suburb.
Heritage listed, Careen House, a single story bungalow made from sandstone blocks that were quarried at the site, is located on Whale Beach designed by the architect Alexander Stewart Jolly in 1931.
Whale Beach is popular due to the a well-known surf break called the Wedge which is north of the beach, just off the rocks.
Whale beach is located on the Northern Beaches approx 40km north of Sydney's CBD.
