Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan said April 24 this year, the day before Anzac Day, will be the 100th anniversary of the now legendary action by Australian forces to liberate the village of Villers-Bretonneux in France’s Picardy region during the Great War.

“This was a critical action which helped the Allies bring the war to a victorious conclusion.”

“The Australian War Memorial in France is located in Villers-Bretonneux and within it lies the graves of over 770 Australian soldiers.

“The sacrifices made by Australian soldiers on behalf of France are to this day acknowledged by the people Villers-Bretonneux who will host their own annual Anzac Day Commemoration service, and who in many other ways continue to express strong bonds of affection and appreciation for the people of Australia,” said Mayor Regan.

Lieutenant Commander Brice Hooper, guest speaker at the 11am Commemoration Service ANZAC Day, Manly.
