Taking their inspiration straight from the bustling streets of Rio De Janeiro, Harbord Diggers is set to bring some samba flair to Freshwater with a Carnival celebration on 7 March.

The annual Brazilian festival is one of the most popular celebrations of culture in the world with enormous, organised parades, glamorous parties and loud music all synonymous with the event.

Traditionally commemorated in the cities of Sao Paolo, Salvador and Rio, this year the Diggers is getting in on the festivities and giving Sydney’s Northern Beaches its own taste of Carnival week.

From 7.30pm, roaming samba dancers will be at Harbord Diggers performing a variety of routines, while others will demonstrate the art of capoeira – a combination of dance, music and acrobatics more commonly known as Brazilian dance fighting.

“We’re also going to have a live DJ to create an authentic music experience and we’ll be playing traditional, Afro-Brazilian inspired music throughout the night,” said Harbord Diggers Venue Manager Arely Carrion.

“We know that the Rio Carnival is one of the most colourful and visual events in the world, and we just wanted to bring a slice of that to the Diggers.

“We hope families, the young and young at heart join us for a little bit of colourful dancing fun on 7 March. The performers will be roving throughout the venue, so join us for dinner in any of our restaurants, the Ocean Terrace or for a drink at the bar so you don’t miss out on the celebrations,” she concluded.
