Sand removal at the entrance of the Narrabeen Lagoon is the most effective flood management strategy for the lagoon and surrounding land, according to a draft management study and plan which will go on public exhibition soon.

Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan said the draft study and plan produced a coordinated approach to flood management for the Lagoon.

“The formation of the Northern Beaches Council enables a consistent approach to the management of flooding throughout the Narrabeen Lagoon catchment instead of having two Councils developing inconsistent approaches.”

The study identified options including bridge alterations, levees, drainage improvements and non-structural options such as flood education, flood warning and development controls.

“Staff have identified a number of opportunities to improve the consistency of flood management on the Northern Beaches.

“These have been progressed as a priority and include a new flood prediction tool for use with emergency services, integrated floodplain planning controls across three former Councils and completion of studies that identified areas of previously unknown flood risk.

“Additionally, staff have been undertaking detailed flood and hydraulic analysis of the flooding that causes frequent closure of the Wakehurst Parkway with the assistance of NSW Government funding.” Mayor Regan said.

Council’s flood program for the region is being developed with input from the Northern Beaches Flood Management Committee which comprises elected Councillors, community representatives from across the Northern Beaches and NSW Government representatives.
