Northern Beaches Council has released its 2019/20 draft budget for community comment including total expenditure of $439.1 million, a capital works program of $99.5 million and a projected surplus of $2 million excluding grants and contributions for capital works.

Council is on target to achieve an estimated $161.6 million in savings over 10 years - exceeding the NSW State Government’s promised target of $76.3 million from the amalgamation.

Debt will continue to be paid down, with the repayment of $5m in loans in 2019/20, bringing the repayments since amalgamation to $58m, reducing loans from $90m to $32m.

Mayor Michael Regan said the draft budget had a focus on renewal of assets, as well as significant environment protection initiatives and improvement of roads and footpaths.

“This is a responsible draft budget which will position Council to continue to provide improvements for the community, with significant ongoing investment in capital projects and maintenance of assets,” Mayor Regan said.

“It builds on the success of former years, providing infrastructure, events and services that make living on the Northern Beaches even better.

“Over $99.5m will be invested in new and renewed assets across the Northern Beaches area including surf clubs, creative spaces, playgrounds and sportsfields.

“Our incredible Coast Walk from Manly to Palm Beach will continue to take shape with another $3.1m investment. This includes $0.79m for art works along the trail.

“And with our new waste collection service coming online we’ll not only be improving service and providing environmental benefits but many residents will actually see lower charges too.

“We continue to pay down the loans inherited from the former Councils plus make the efficiency savings promised by amalgamation, allowing us to invest $29.5m into new priority infrastructure, improved service levels and lower Domestic Waste Management Charge for ratepayers.

“Plus we are prioritising areas of need our community has called for, increasing our cleaning services in public areas and providing more childcare places for children under three.”

Council is seeking community feedback on the draft budget and the Delivery Program which specifies all the major work that Council will undertake over the next four years to deliver the outcomes and strategies contained in the Community Strategic Plan.

The public exhibition period for the draft budget and Delivery Program is Friday April 26 to Sunday May 26.

Delivery Program Roadshows will be staged across the area on the following dates:

  • Mon 6 May, 6 - 7.30pm (Mona Vale Library Meeting Room)
  • Wed 8 May, 6 - 7.30pm (Manly Town Hall)
  • Thu 9 May, 6 - 7.30pm (Coastal Environment Centre, North Narrabeen)
  • Mon 13 May, 6 - 7.30pm (Civic Centre Dee Why)
  • Mon 20 May, 6 - 7.30pm (Glen Street Theatre Foyer)
