Northern Beaches Council was acknowledged in two separate honours presented at the 2018 NSW Local Government Excellence Awards ceremony held at Darling Island on Friday 8 June.

The Local Government Excellence Awards acknowledge significant achievements in local government across the State as well as outstanding work by members of Local Government Professionals Australia, the peak industry professional association.

Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan said he was very honoured to be acknowledged at this special event.

“These are prestigious awards and we are pleased to have been named with the ‘best of the best’ in local government across NSW,” Mayor Regan said.

The awards presented were in the Community Partnerships and Collaboration category, and separately, The Col Mills Scholarship which is given to a younger professional drawn from the local government sector.

The Community Partnerships and Collaboration award (for communities with a population over 60,000) was presented in recognition of the widely-praised Northern Beaches Council - Dee Why PCYC Project.

The award acknowledges “genuine and effective partnerships and collaborations, as well as initiatives demonstrating a commitment to working with or in the community to achieve positive outcomes.”

The $26 million Dee Why PCYC facility on the Kingsway opposite Council’s Civic Centre was opened in June 2017 to deliver enhanced social, sporting, cultural and recreational options for Northern Beaches’ youth, as well as to provide an integrated carpark close to public transport.

The 2018 Col Mills Scholarship was presented to Northern Beaches Council’s Project Manager (Environment & Infrastructure), Mr. Russell Peake. Russell works on a wide range of Council’s environment and infrastructure projects.

The Scholarship is made available specifically to promising younger professionals drawn from the local government sector to better provide them with access to important professional development opportunities.

In the citation accompanying his Scholarship, Russell was described as “a bright, young professional, a future leader and a well-deserved recipient of the scholarship.”

“The PCYC project was a fantastic partnership and is an incredible addition for young people across the Northern Beaches.

“Special congratulations also to Russel Peake who won the Col Mills Scholarship – one of only two awarded each year to young professionals in the sector. It is a great testament to his commitment,” said Mayor Regan.
