Newport’s Allan McCormac the National Director of Driver Reviver Australia, sends a plea to other Northern Beaches residents. “Too many people are already tired before leaving on their holidays either from hard week’s work or because of poor quality sleep. Parents understand how tired kids can get at the end of the school year, it’s the same with adults,” says Allan.

Fatalities caused by poor decisions made by tired drivers can be avoided if drivers care enough to plan their trips. Our volunteers are giving up their own holiday time to help these people arrive safely at their destination,” Allan said

Driver Reviver volunteers are anticipating a busy time on the roads over the Summer holiday period. They will be ready at over 150 Toll Driver Reviver Sites across all States with volunteers encouraging drivers and their passengers to stop for regular breaks before they become tired no matter how long their journey.

Driver Reviver Sites offer a safe environment for all motorists, the chance to chat with volunteers from many different organisations such as Lions Clubs, SES, Volunteer Fire Fighters and Rescue Squads.

So the volunteers can offer a free service, major national sponsor The Toll Group has this month delivered over ten tonnes of refreshments provided by national product sponsors, The Arnott’s Foundation, Bushells Coffee and Tea and Sunshine Sugar.

Families often find stopping at a Toll Driver Reviver Site and exposing kids to a road safety message and the concept of communities supporting each other by volunteering makes for a more interesting and stress-free journey.

Tips for a safe journey:

  • get a good night’s sleep
  • avoid driving at times you’re normally sleeping
  • avoid long drives after a day’s work
  • understand the effects of any medicine you’re taking which might affect your driving
  • plan to include regular rest breaks on long trips
  • know and look for the warning signs of fatigue
  • when possible, arrange to share the driving
  • if you feel tired while driving, pull over in a safe place (such as a rest area or driver reviver site) and take a break or even a nap.
