Harbord Diggers Supports Unique Anzac Day Initiative

Host to the southern hemisphere’s largest game of two up, Harbord Diggers has been the centre of ANZAC Day commemorations for more than 50 years.

The Club has provided a place to gather, to remember, to respect and to pay homage to the sacrifices of our servicemen and women across too many wars, in distant lands, both now and in the past.

This year represents the first year that many Australians will miss an ANZAC Day Commemorative Service – whether at the Diggers usual morning service, community cenotaphs or those hosted at local clubs.

ANZAC Day is a symbolic day for Australians and New Zealanders and Mounties Group is supporting the RSL & Services Clubs Association initiatives of encouraging local communities to mark ANZAC Day by Respecting the Day directly from their homes.

“If nothing else, the current circumstances are showing us on a daily basis that there are members of our community stepping up every day in service of their communities. It is a reminder that as Australians, the spirit of mateship runs through our veins,” said Mounties Group President Kevin Ingram.

“ANZAC Day commemorates the selfless sacrifices made by ordinary Australians in wars across the years and across the oceans. It is essential that we as a community never forget those men and women and what they have given to ensure the freedom’s that, until very recently, we might well have taken for granted.”

Mounties is supporting the Returned Services League Australia in asking the community to take to their driveways, balconies or living rooms at 6am to recite the Ode and play the Last Post, and to follow that with a minute of silence to mark when the first Australian troops landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula on April 25, 1915.

Mounties Group Chief Executive Officer Dale Hunt said, “I believe that much of the Australian character has been forged on the battlefield. It is not in our DNA to simply give up. And to submit to an ANZAC Day without fanfare is not acceptable.

“We are encouraging our members and the members of the community, to take to their driveways with chalk and draw poppies, write the ode or take photographs of their family commemorating this ANZAC Day and share that picture paying their respects to veterans, with the hashtag #westandtogether.

“Regardless of our current challenges, 100 of our staff are working with community transport organisation Easylink to make deliveries of 1,500 ANZAC biscuits to vulnerable and isolated members of our communities and conducting a welfare check at the same time.

“So, we will honour the efforts of our fallen, perhaps not as we might have done in previous years, but with no less emotion. And we are asking the community of the Northern Beaches to join us in doing so,” he concluded.
