Glen Street’s screening of MANHATTAN SHORT holds a special place in the heart of founder and director, Nicholas Mason.

Mason grew up locally and in 1998 screened 16 short films onto a screen mounted on the side of a truck on Mulberry Street, Little Italy, New York for the inaugural MANHATTAN SHORT.

A year later the Festival moved to Union Square Park in New York, and it was events after 9/11, that transformed this event into a worldwide phenomenon, becoming the only film festival on the planet that unfolds, simultaneously.

Now in its 21st year, the event now involves 350 venues screening the films across six continents during a one week period, between 27 September and 7 October, 2018.

The exclusive Sydney screening is held at Glen Street Theatre, Belrose on Sunday 30 September where film lovers can unite with over 100,000 film-lovers around the world to watch and vote on the final nine films.

Best Film and Best Actor awards are determined by ballots cast by the audiences. By virtue of their selection by MANHATTAN SHORT, each short film is automatically Oscar-qualified.

The nine MANHATTAN SHORT finalists hail from eight countries with films from Austria, Canada, Germany, Hungary, Kosovo, New Zealand, USA, and two films from the United Kingdom.

These finalist short films represent the best short films from an impressive 1565 submissions from 73 countries, testimony to the enduring vibrancy and creativity of short films.

They represent an extraordinary range of film genres that includes intimate dramas; fast-paced animation; spine-tingling tales; a World War II epic; a film shot entirely underwater and a comedy.
