LED Street Lights to be Installed in Council’s Zero Emissions Drive

Council has taken a leap towards achieving its long-term zero carbon emission targets by partnering with electricity distributor Ausgrid to install thousands of low-energy LED street lights in our residential streets.

Mayor Michael Regan said more than 9300 streetlights from Manly to Palm Beach will be switched to the energy-efficient street lights over the next two years.

“The new LED street lighting will have significant benefits for the Northern Beaches community, by providing more effective high-quality light while delivering an 80.5% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

“It can take up to 125 watts to power older streetlights whereas the new LEDs use just 17 watts. Savings from reduced street-light energy consumption, maintenance and capital costs are estimated to be more than $1.7 million over the next ten years.

“The new LED lights will also lower Council’s carbon emissions by 3,000 tonnes a year.”

Ausgrid Chief Operating Officer Trevor Armstrong said the new LED lights were easier to maintain and will last up to 20 years.

“Ausgrid is proud to be playing a leading role in this area and I’m delighted we will be working together with the Northern Beaches Council on this important initiative.

“We know that street lights are an important part of making our communities safer and residents have told us they prefer the lighting quality and colour of LEDs,” Mr Armstrong said.
