Manly Alcohol Free Zone Extended for Another Four Years

An alcohol free zone in Manly will be extended for a further four years, following the adoption of a Council motion last Tuesday evening.

The existing zone covers public roads, footpaths and carparks within the area bounded by North Steyne and South Steyne, Ashburner Street, East and West Esplanade, Eustace Street, Pittwater Road and Steinton Street.

Council will also place a NSW Police recommendation to widen the alcohol free zone to cover the area around Manly Oval and Ivanhoe Park, surrounded by Sydney Road, Park Avenue and Raglan Street on public exhibition for 30 days.

The existing alcohol free zone has been in place in the Manly area for sixteen years.

Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan said the extension until July 2022 means Manly would continue to benefit from improved public safety.

“We believe this alcohol free zone is an effective way to assist both Council and police to curb anti-social behaviour in Manly. 

 “For more than two decades, the Manly community has consistently been concerned with alcohol-related anti-social behaviour in the area.

“There have been many improvements over this time; however, it is considered that the alcohol free zone should stay in place to help support a safe and enjoyable environment for residents and visitors of Manly,” Mayor Regan said.

According to figures from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics & Research, Manly recorded almost 908 incidences related to liquor offences per 100,000 people compared to the NSW average of just 143. These figures were for the year to March 2018.

Prior to adopting the motion, Council undertook an extensive public consultation process.
