Manly Residential Parking Review to Lead to Better, Fairer Parking Conditions

Northern Beaches Council will work with the community to review and audit the parking permits schemes in the Manly area to move towards a more equitable and sustainable system which meets new Roads and Maritime (RMS) requirements.

Following endorsement at Council’s meeting this week, the review will include a full audit of all off-street car parking spaces in all ten scheme areas in the Manly area.

These areas include Little Manly, Balgowlah, Tower Hill, Tower Hill Extension, Ocean Beach, The Isthmus, Fairy Bower, Ivanhoe Park, Ivanhoe Park Extension and Ethel Street.

Mayor Michael Regan said the first parking permit schemes were introduced around the Manly CBD in 1985 and are now no longer in line with the current RMS mandatory guidelines.

“Parking in Manly is a challenge at the best of times and even with a permit it’s tricky to find a space. That’s because there are too many permits for the spaces allocated and resident parking.

“This has resulted in residents not being able to find suitable parking near their residence, and impacts on local business as people can’t find short term spaces, causing high levels of frustration for all!

“We are keen to work with our community on the best way to go about this, how we can implement a better, fairer residential parking system across the Manly region.

“Council will invite permit holders to attend a range of community engagement drop ins as well as encourage all residents and property owners in the affected precincts to provide input into the consultation phase of the project.

“This review will also help us consider resident parking zones in other areas of high demand in accordance with RMS guidelines.”

The review is expected to be conducted over the next two to three months and will then report back to Council.

The report will include outcomes of the community engagement and also directions and actions required to ensure parking schemes comply in all areas.
