Manly-Warringah Choir Concert: Haydn and Friends

Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven all lived in Vienna in the late 18th century, and are frequently referred to as the three pillars of the Classical period. But were they friends? What is a friend? Is it someone to whom we turn to share our joys and troubles? A person who supports us in our striving to achieve our dreams; gives us the tools with which to do so?

“Papa Haydn” undoubtedly had a huge influence on the music of both Mozart and Beethoven. There is evidence that Mozart had great affection for Haydn (he dedicated 6 strings quartets to him), and mutual respect is evident in their letters. It is significant that Mozart’s Requiem was played at Haydn’s funeral. Beethoven had a great respect for the older Haydn and craved his praise; but their friendship was reputedly a rocky one. Beethoven was notoriously difficult to get on with.

The main choral work is Haydn’s “Nelson Mass”. The subtitle, “A Mass for Troubled Times” is appropriate. The music reflects not only the turmoil created by Napoleon’s expected invasion of Austria, but also Haydn’s resilience in dealing with professional and personal challenges at this time. Beethoven’s Second Symphony, is one of his most energetic, cheerful and outgoing. There are provocative surprises and much humour: possibly defiant rebellion against the recent realization that his deafness would prove incurable. Mozart’s delightful “Te Deum”, (written when he was 13 years old and on his way to Italy!) shines like a beacon in the dark.

Were these three composers friends? Who knows? But I think we can be sure that if we ever need a friend to turn to – we can always rely on one, if not all three of these composers to lift our spirits and to celebrate life.

As usual, the choir will be conducted by the charismatic Dr Carlos Alvarado. In addition we are excited to have the same 4 superb young soloists that performed with us in December: Georgia Melville, Celeste Haworth, Nathan Bryon and Hayden Barrington. Those of you who heard them sing in the Messiah, will welcome the opportunity to hear them again. The main choral work for this concert will be Haydn's Nelson Mass. Mozart's Te Deum will also be performed. Plus Beethoven's Symphony No.2.

Come to our concert and enjoy their music! You are sure to find old friends as well as making new ones.
