Northern Beaches Draft Road Safety Plan to be Placed on Public Exhibition

Northern Beaches Council is seeking community input on its draft Northern Beaches Road Safety Plan.

Developed with a vision of ‘Safe Movement Always’ for residents, the primary focus for Council is to introduce a number of successful initiatives which will result in a comfortable travel environment for all road users.

Northern Beaches Council Mayor Michael Regan encouraged community feedback.

“There are far too many deaths and injuries on our roads each year. Recent statistics showed the majority of accidents on the Northern Beaches were caused by three common factors - alcohol, speeding and fatigue.

“Alcohol related accidents in particular were a real concern, the Northern Beaches (9.1 per cent) was well above the NSW state average (5 per cent). This has been a concerning issue for some time and we need to look for new ways to reduce these statistics.

“We will look to work closely with local police about this issue, and ensure they always have significant input.

“Council will also continue to promote the fact that road safety is a shared responsibility and everyone’s choices and behaviours affect other road users.”

Council’s draft Plan follows four pillars approach in line with the Centre for Road Safety’s Road Safety Plan 2021 – Safe Speeds, Safe People, Safe Roads and Safe Vehicles.

“We will also incorporate these pillars in how we assess, plan and delivery Council’s projects into the future,’’ the Mayor added.

“Additionally, Council will explore the best ways to reduce car based commuter travel when possible and also facilitate cycling and walking networks as viable transport options.”

Mayor Regan also stated the Road Safety Plan will apply until 2024, stretching from Palm Beach to Manly.

“Every year road accidents cost communities millions of dollars, and that is before you even factor in people losing their lives,’’ the Mayor said.

“Ideally, we would love to see no lives lost on the peninsula, but before that happens, people’s attitude and behaviour on our roads need to be better. Council is committed to this cause in the immediate and long term.”

The draft Northern Beaches Road Safety Plan will be exhibited for at least 28 days prior to being considered for adoption.
