Northern Beaches Kids Pay Tribute to Animal War Heroes

Forestville RSL held its first event since the Covid-19 lockdown to honour the role of animals in conflict - and the work of talented Northern Beaches primary school kids.

Nine primary schools across the Northern Beaches and North Shore participated this year in the annual competition.

The prizewinners' presentation at the weekend (Saturday 25 July) was the first event the RSL had hosted since the Covid-19 lockdown - despite the challenges involved, the RSL felt this event was too important to postpone.

The competition encourages pride and patriotism in young people by inviting them to commemorate Australia's military heritage through prose, poetry or art.

This year, the often-overlooked role of animals in Australia's conflicts was recognised for the first time by the competition, with the theme They Had no Choice: Animals in Australia's Conflicts.

The competition marks the upcoming launch of a new permanent exhibition at the RSL featuring rare artefacts from Australian conflicts - including a 325-year-old cannon and a life-sized statue of a whaler war horse.

The first-prize winners were presented with miniatures of the horse statue by Jonathan O'Dea, Member for Davidson and newly appointed Speaker of the NSW Legislative Assembly.

One of the region's smallest primary schools, Kambora Public School (Davidson) punched well above its weight in the competition with five prizewinners in the line-up of 12.

Jonathan O'Dea spoke to the children about the importance of democracy and freedom, and the sacrifices made by our defence forces to protect the Australian way of life.
