Northern Beaches Council is calling on talented artists to submit proposals for a temporary mural on the Manly Corso.

In a joint project between St Matthew’s Church and Northern Beaches Council, the mural will cover hoardings during the redevelopment of a significant retail building adjacent to the church.

Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan commended the initiative to artists and urged them to use their talents to create an eye-catching, thought-provoking work.

“Council is looking for artists who will incorporate interactive elements to draw people to their art and to also support businesses nearby.

“It’s about creating something that celebrates our local artists while improving the aesthetic of the Corso during the reconstruction work,” Mayor Regan said.

Judges are looking for an artwork that reflects the spirit of Manly, which draws on local themes and has wide appeal. For example, artwork that illustrates the changes in the Manly Corso over time, or highlights changes in beach life over the years.

Prospective artists will need to include a concept drawing and examples of previous works when completing their application.

Mural artists with a strong track record in large scale works are invited to apply. Due to the scale of the project, artist collectives or teams will be viewed favourably.

A selection panel consisting of representatives from Council and the community will review and evaluate all expressions of interest to decide the successful submission.

Applications close 1 July 2018 with the successful applicant being announced the week commencing Monday 16 July 2018.

The successful artists will be paid for their time and materials. Work of the hoarding will be completed in August.

Applicants are encouraged to discuss their proposals with Council. For further information please visit Council's website.
