Kimbriki Resource Recovery Centre is partnering with not-for profit charity Bikes 4 Life to reuse unwanted bikes with bold plans to divert over 500 bikes from landfill every year.

Bikes 4 Life collects, restores and provides bicycles to marginalised and impoverished communities around the world.

On 15 November, the group will move into a new home at Kimbriki’s community hub providing plenty of space for them to sort and repair bikes collected in Council clean-ups or dropped off to the site.

Kimbriki’s General Manager Asset Management, Mark Winser said Kimbriki is proud to host and support Bikes 4 Life.

“The Bikes 4 Life program fits perfectly with our mantra of Rethink, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

“Kimbriki’s involvement in the community goes beyond that of your typical landfill operation. We divert over 80% of the waste we receive from landfill through our many recycling activities.

“The partnership with Bikes 4 Life compliments our workshops and educational programs including our wonderful Eco House & Garden which attracts over 5,000 people annually and provides free visits for local schools.

“Just like Bikes 4 Life do with donated or unwanted bikes, Kimbriki’s Buy Back Centre gives materials rescued from landfill a chance at a second life.

“We welcome the Bikes 4 Life team to Kimbriki and look forward to a successful partnership for many years to come,” Mr Winser said.

Directors Chris and Sara Roe from Bikes 4 Life’s Sydney operation said their work is invaluable.

“In remote communities a bicycle is not only a means of transport to places of employment and education but can provide many with access to remote sources of food, water, medicine and shelter.

Bikes 4 Life is extremely proud of the work we have done to date. Our Sydney workshop alone has provided over 2000 bikes to various disadvantaged communities in Cambodia, Africa, Central Australia and Thailand since 2014.  In addition our operations in Melbourne and Brisbane have donated over 4,000 bikes to various communities in need.

“Volunteers are the life-blood of Bikes 4 Life so we’re also calling out for people to help with our bike workshops. Our workshops are fun and suitable for people of all ages and backgrounds, and no bike experience is needed as we have a number of roles for our volunteers,” Mrs Roe said.

Bikes 4 Life will be holding a bike drop off day at Kimbriki on Sunday 9 December, 2018 from 9am – 3pm. The group will sort through the existing bikes on site which have been disposed of by Kimbriki customers to determine which ones are suitable for repair and a new life. Their monthly workshops will commence from February 2019.

Bikes 4 Life will be the second group to join the Community Area on site, following the Artists in Residence who create site-specific public artwork using resources that have been recovered from Kimbriki.
