An iconic reserve in Narrabeen has officially been named Surfrider Gardens by Northern Beaches Council, paying tribute to local identity Tom Kirsop and Surfrider Foundation Australia.

Mr Kirsop and his wife Margaret have been Narrabeen residents since the 1980s and are revered by many locals thanks to their significant contribution to the area.

Mayor Michael Regan said it was important the tireless efforts of the Kirsop family were formally recognised at the Ocean Street site in the form of a plaque.

“Council is always happy to formally acknowledge quality people who give back to the community, and Tom and Margaret Kirsop certainly fall into that category,’’ the Mayor said.

“Their collective list of achievements is endless and inspiring, starting with Tom being awarded an OAM in 2011 for his service to conservation and the environment.

“He then went onto receive an AM (Order of Australia) Honour in 2016. Other accolades include volunteering to the Australian Conservation Foundation, the Total Environment Centre and of course with Surfrider Foundation Australia.

“I’m also reliably informed Tom surfed Uluwatu (in Bali) at the age of 80, which is just incredible.

“Tom and Margaret heavily advocated for our beaches to be protected for many years, I’m looking forward to formally celebrating their achievements in front of their family and friends.”

Council is hosting a formal event for the plaque unveiling and naming of the reserve at Ocean St, Narrabeen on Tuesday 17 December from 9.45am.

Local residents and media are welcome to attend, with Tuesday also Mr Kirsop’s 90th birthday.
