Revamped Manly Dam Play Space will Better Connect Community with Park’s Heritage

The playground at Manly Warringah War Memorial Park (known as Manly Dam) will undergo a $300,000 upgrade within the existing footprint following extensive community consultation.

The original proposal for a larger all-abilities playground has been scaled back in response to community concerns that the original proposal may have impacted too heavily on the distinctive cultural and natural heritage of the park.

The additional funds are planned to be diverted to Clontarf for a significant upgrade of the playground and amenities as part of the masterplan process for this busy picnic area.

“While all parties have been complimentary on the original design proposal for the inclusive playground at Manly Dam, the expressed opinion from the community was that the proposal was not in keeping with the current use of the area, particularly in view of its status as a War Memorial site,” said Northern Beaches Mayor, Michael Regan.

“There is support for upgrading the play facilities at Manly Dam but to limit the upgrade to the current playground footprint. This more modest proposal would; however, also include an accessible link to the toilets currently being refurbished.

“Council will also ensure the reworked playground better connects the community and children in particular to the natural environment, cultural and Aboriginal heritage values of the site.”

Council will consult with all stakeholders involved in the project to date on a revised draft design prior to any work being implemented at Manly Dam.

The proposed reduced footprint for the Manly Dam play-space will have limited, if any, impact on the natural environment and, in particular, all existing native trees will be preserved.

Similarly, Council will strive to ensure that the proposal at Clontarf Beach and Reserve will not remove or damage the significant trees there, some of which were planted over 120 years ago when the land was first reclaimed.

The scoping study of the Clontarf Park Landscape Masterplan has been on exhibition for community comment since 17 November.

“I am confident the alternative proposed play space at Manly Dam will nonetheless provide a much needed reinvigoration of the play facilities and also ensure there is inclusive access to them,” said Mayor Regan.
