Saturday Night’s Alright for Rock n’ Roll

30 years ago Christopher Joseph Ward joined the greatest punk rock band in the world and became CJ Ramone. At the same time two teenagers met at a party in Belrose and bonded over their love of punk rock music and the Ramones in particular (one was wearing a Ramones shirt and furiously air guitaring at the time).

This chance meeting of like minds was the genesis of northern beaches band Atomic Sphincters, forming in 1995 and whose candle burned bright and fast. Playing over several years for fun at local venues including the Belrose President Hotel, Collaroy Surf Rock, Narrabeen Sands, Harbord Diggers, Manly Boatshed, and numerous house and surf club parties, the 3-piece band went on a 15-year hiatus while professions and families became the priority.

But the songs kept coming even without an audience. In 2017 they resurrected and have not looked back, dusting off old favourites and nailing a bunch of new tracks, playing regularly at the Time and Tide in Dee Why and the Narrabeen RSL supporting their mates Tshitaki, and bands such as Astrodeath and Mi-Sex.

This weekend they come full circle and open for their idol CJ Ramone, currently in Australia as part of his global farewell tour. Don’t miss this opportunity to see a punk icon pump out your favourite Ramones tunes, also supported by Sydney rockers Black Heart Breakers. Our local lads the Atomic Sphincters will entertain you with their trademark high energy and humorous songs such as “Hurry Up’’ and “Junk Food”.

This Saturday 21 September from 8pm at Narrabeen RSL Club, 116 Nareen Parade, North Narrabeen (phone 02 9913 8016 for details). Tickets $50 through Oztix. If you can’t make the Saturday gig you can catch the Atomic Sphincters at the Moshpit in Erskineville on Sunday night.
