Standouts in a tough year for small businesses

Northern Beaches Council congratulates the winners and finalists of the 2020 Local Business Awards who faced some of the harshest trading conditions on record.

Mayor Michael Regan said he was pleased that Council was once again a major sponsor of the awards, backing the two major categories – the Inclusion Award and the Sustainability Award.

“I want to applaud the winners and every business who took part in this year’s awards,’ Cr Regan said.

“It has been an extraordinarily difficult year for the whole community enduring enormous hardships, and I want to praise Northern Beaches businesses for showing amazing resilience.”

As we today [3 December] recognise International Day of People with Disability, Council sponsored the Inclusion Award for the second year in a row.

One in five Australians has some kind of disability, so making a business more accessible for everyone benefits the community as well as the business.

Winner of the Inclusion Award was The Cube Allied Health, Brookvale, for providing services for the whole community and catering for everyone’s needs regardless of their abilities.

Assessing the win, judges found The Cube was this year’s standout nomination for showing “a strong commitment to meeting the different needs of their clients including tailoring equipment and training programs leading to better outcomes.”

The runner-up was Plus Fitness, Brookvale who judges said took “several decisive actions to improve the physical space of their business including ramps, accessible bathrooms and a spacious physical layout showing a clear consideration for people with disability.”

Council’s sponsorship of this Award seeks to encourage the local business community to continue to make access and inclusion a priority, knowing that being inclusive is highly valued by Northern Beaches residents.

Winner of the Sustainability Award was Mona Vale-based microbrewery, Modus Operandi, which demonstrated significant innovation and measured environmental benefits in its production of craft beers.

The company incorporates recycled material and green energy in its production, as well as contributing to charitable and community environmental organisation.

Former 2015 winner in this category was health supplements company Blackmores in Warriewood, who took out the runner-up award for its continued demonstration of outstanding leadership in environmental improvement and corporate social responsibility.

This award builds upon Council’s work to promote sustainable best practice across our business community.

Council will also be marking International Day of People with Disability by partnering with Uniting Local Area Coordination (LAC) on a pop-up exhibition of artworks by people with disability across the Northern Sydney region on Manly Corso. The artworks were submitted to the Uniting LAC Northern Sydney Art Competition, celebrating the talents of our local residents with disability.
