Krav Maga Northern Beaches, one of Sydney’s premiere self-defense schools, recently conducted a survey on child safety and bullying to find out and address parents’ concerns. The survey was completed by over 200 respondents local to the Northern Beaches area.

Results showed that 42% of respondents believe that bullying is their biggest concern for their children, followed by abduction at 20%. In relation to bullying, the top two traits that parents want their kids to develop are resilience (33%) and confidence (26%).

Director and Head Instructor Adam Gulla wanted to find out parents’ opinions on children and personal safety. “We wanted to get parents’ opinions on matters such as stranger danger awareness, and how it relates to child safety and bullying,” says Gulla. “Safety within the community was also something that we wanted to explore and know more about. Is enough being done to raise stranger danger awareness?”

The data gathered also reveals that martial arts was the activity of choice for parents, at a unanimous 75%. Alarmingly, 63% of respondents felt that their community was not promoting awareness on stranger danger much as they should. “More than anything parents want peace of mind when allowing their kids to walk to and from school and other short distances.  Parents are expressing their concern as from the eyes of a predator, a child walking alone is an easy target and if they don’t have any skills to defend themselves with, they are very vulnerable,” says Gulla.

The data also reveals that only 43% of respondents’ children have the means of contacting them directly in case of an emergency.

Adam established the self-defense club in 2014 in Darwin, before relocating and setting up shop in the Northern Beaches in 2016. “One of the reasons I started the school was because there had been a spate of suspicious approaches to children by men in cars and parents were seeking self-defense experts to teach their kids how to protect themselves. It’s extremely rewarding to teach young people some simple and practical skills that gives them confidence in many aspects of their lives,” says Gulla.

The club has significantly increased over the years and currently includes 400 active members. Apart from the regular classes, Krav Maga Northern Beaches also holds seminars and workshops throughout the year. Adam has a University Degree in Physical Education and Health. This qualification has enabled him to create a highly structured and professional kids’ program that will keep children engaged and advancing to higher levels of skill and personal development.

Krav Maga Northern Beaches holds classes and conducts self-defense lessons for kids aged 4 to 12, teens and adults alike.
