The Keep Australia Beautiful NSW 2018 Sustainable Cities Awards moves into an important stage next week, as assessing starts in metropolitan areas of NSW in search of this State’s top Sustainable City.

Since 1995, the Sustainable Cities Program has been invigorating the civic pride, community spirit and environmental commitment of metropolitan Sydney councils and communities. An award-based program, Sustainable Cities celebrates the achievements of councils and communities who implement projects that improve their area’s natural and built environments.

Four (4) metropolitan council areas in NSW will be visited during Assessing Week (August 16-30th) by our volunteer assessor Peter Clarke. Peter has been assessing for many years and is experienced at knowing what to look for and understands the hard work that goes into preparation for entering the Awards. These local areas are competing in the Overall winner category, the results will be announced on 17 October at the much-anticipated Sustainable Cities Awards event at Blacktown, the 2017 NSW Overall winner.

Val Southam, CEO of Keep Australia Beautiful NSW, said Assessing Week for the Overall category is an important process that assists the organisation to ground truth projects submitted by councils, community organisations and businesses. Local areas that submit a minimum of four projects for the awards in specific categories, automatically qualify to be considered for the Overall category and as always, the competition for this honour is hotly contested.

“The submissions received this year show that many councils and communities throughout metropolitan Sydney are continuing to develop innovative and resourceful ways of being sustainable in the face of a host of financial, environmental and social issues. It’s now time for our trained assessor to look at the projects, meet with the entrants and evaluate the overall impact of these initiatives in these three local government areas. We encourage everyone to get involved; to show the assessor why their council deserves to win this year.” Ms Southam said.

As well as the Overall State Sustainable Cities Award, specific awards will be given in the following categories at the Blacktown weekend:

• Hey Tosser! Litter Prevention Award-sponsored by the NSW EPA
• Waste Less Recycle More Waste Minimisation Award-sponsored by the NSW EPA
• Return and Earn Litter Prevention Award
