Take a Look into the Boundless World-View of a Bilingual Student at the German International School Sydney’s Open Day

Families looking to join the German International School Sydney’s (GISS) global community will be provided with a taste of the bilingual education system at their quarterly open day. With students from over 20 different countries and offering four languages, student life at the GISS is the embodiment of globalisation in the 21st century.

Guided school tours led by senior students will run every hour, providing prospective families a first-hand look at the contemporary facilities of the spacious Terrey Hills campus. Tours will follow the well thought-out school layout, where the buildings are structured to represent a student’s educational path; starting with the preschool and primary school, followed by the junior, secondary and senior school.

Head underground to explore the sports hall which can accommodate up to 400 people, and outdoors GISS boasts a covered state of the art multi-functional sports field. Extra-curricular sporting activities are strategically included to complement a challenging academic curriculum.

GISS’s ‘immersion schooling’ approach engages students in both German and English language activities, and encourages motivating learning between peers. Bilingual immersion schooling and the constant switch between languages drives students to become bilingual in an organic and sustainable way. The benefits of bilingualism have not gone unnoticed in recent years, as researchers continue to report the improved concentration and brain function seen from bilingualism, not to mention future career advantages of speaking another language.

GISS’s final open day for 2018 will give potential students and their family an insight into the global experience and expansive world-view gained by the current students, a direct effect of bilingual immersion schooling and GISS’s diverse and closely integrated school community.
