The Diggers Display Sea of Poppies for ANZAC Day

Hundreds of local children are supporting Harbord Diggers to create a ‘Sea of Poppies’ – a highlight of the new club’s inaugural ANZAC Day commemoration.

Thanks to the efforts of four Northern Beaches learning institutions, 1900 poppies are being planted in the garden beds of the venue’s outdoor Ocean Terrace, with this area to host Harbord Diggers’ ANZAC Day commemorations including a morning service and two-up.

This breathtaking display will add to Diggers’ steeped ANZAC tradition, with the club already renowned for hosting Australia’s biggest two-up ring.

The 1900 poppies each represent a local serviceman who sacrificed his life during WWI, giving many of the children their first introduction to the ANZAC story.

Harbord Primary School, Stewart House, St John the Baptist Primary School and Explore & Develop Freshwater have worked together to make the poppies, which will all be planted before ANZAC Day.

“The children began making the poppies last month and it was very special to welcome Stewart House children to the club last week to personally plant their poppies,” said Diggers General Manager, Michael Phillips.

“We wanted to encourage the children to learn more about ANZAC Day and the significance of the poppy.

“Combining that process with art and creativity has proven a wonderful educational experience.

“I’d like to congratulate staff from each of our three partners in this project – not just for their time and efforts, but also for their ability to deliver the ANZAC message in an age-appropriate manner,” added Mr Phillips.

The poppies will be on display for ANZAC Day on Thursday 25 April.

“Our first ANZAC commemoration as a new development is an occasion everyone at the club has been looking forward to since we opened the doors to our state-of-the-art new venue last June.

“Harbord Diggers has been marking ANZAC Day for almost 90 years and is proud of its reputation as a venue with strong diggers ties and a longstanding legacy for not only local residents, but for people across NSW to attend on this special day to commemorate all our soldiers and those who continue to fight for our freedom,” he continued.

The Harbord Diggers ANZAC service on Thursday 25 April will be held in the outdoor Ocean Terrace of the club commencing at 8am sharp and will be followed by what is widely recognised as Sydney’s largest game of two-up from 12pm.

With a capacity turn-out expected, entry on ANZAC Day may be limited and therefore membership is encouraged for just $6 per year. For the safety of all guests, the venue is also restricting access from 10am to over 18s only.

“Hundreds of car spaces are available for our ANZAC Day in our basement car park and entry to the Diggers will be via our Evans Street side due to road closures on Lumsdaine Drive,” added Mr Phillips.
