The Resurgence Of Theatrical Cabaret…. And How To Survive As A Small Independent Theatre Producer In Sydney.

On Sydney’s north shore there is an entertainment venue rich in show business history, that has been dark for almost 5 years and at risk of being permanently closed down.

Enter The Kermond’s - a fourth generation performer  Wayne Scott Kermond who’s family have a direct link to the  glorious days of vaudeville entertainment - along with his wife Katie ( ex-performer turned cabaret producer) approached the local council, and got approval to run a season of  “pop-up cabaret” … the first win - as they get to keep the venue “live” …… at lest for a little while.

They  work hard and do up the venue in the style of  the beautiful old iconic Sydney theatres  such as The Tivoli, The Trocadero,  and The  Prince Edward Theatre…. Back in the day, these  beautiful opulent venues not only showcased the best of  Cabaret, but also  gave birth to the celebration of the Australian larrikin - they  were places of  entertainment with a strong sense of community…..

And the Kermond’s want to reinvent  that  same  sense of beauty, fun and  community.

They believe that in this screen driven world of today, where people live an increasingly lonely, separate existence, spending hours in front of  netflix or the like ….. that  there  is a need for live entertainment venues, where people can  share an experience… where they can celebrate comedy, beauty and talent. There is something very magical when an audience is  in a darkened room and become one  with the performance - they share a special space.

So the Kermond’s work hard to make the dream happen …. they use local social media  and  grass roots marketing to “get the word out “ ….. And  they take a big financial risk - someone once asked Wayne if he goes to the casino or bets on sport? He said no “ that’s not gambling …..  show business is gambling” - it is certainly not for the weak hearted, as the Kermond’s no too well …

But the Kermond’s pride themselves in being independent professional producers. As Wayne says, "here in Australia we have some of the best, most highly trained performers in the world, but there is little to no work for them so most of them have to go overseas. We are determined in our small way to keep as many young people working here as we can."

Wayne himself is a master of the cabaret style …. the "off the cuff” funny man - he was “born funny” and  has had many years to develop his craft. He masterly leads the audience on the adventure, and as a result  something magical happens - they fall in love with him.

So ….  The Kermond ’s have  the Venue, the Show and the Audience ….That wonderful audience, who are rediscovering how fantastic live Cabaret really is, and often return to the show a number of times - as with true Cabaret, it’s never the same from show to show …..  only loosely  scripted and very immersive ….. the show varies with each performance, and the Audience love it.

So how does the story end…..?

Will the venue continue to stay live?

Where to next with the show?

You need to talk to The Kermond’s.

An amazing show business family that are working at keeping the industry alive … one ticket at a time.
