The Rising Tide of Krav Maga

The roots of Krav Maga first took hold in the late 1930’s in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia by a young man named Imi Lichtenfeld. Imi was a natural athlete, holding European championship titles in a variety of sports, including boxing, wrestling, and gymnastics. It was from his father, however, a famous and highly respected police detective and trainer, that Imi learned street ?ghting skills that he would use to save his own life and those of his neighbors on the rough streets of Eastern Europe.

Due to its incredible effectiveness, Krav Maga has since spread to the civilian population and is now taught throughout the world. In the late 90s, Krav Maga was unheard of in Australia, but now new schools are opening right around the country. Plan International Australia, an NGO, surveyed about 500 women in Sydney last year and found that about 90 per cent of those aged 18-25 said they felt unsafe on the city's streets at night. Enrolment in Krav Maga classes has surged from 10 per cent to almost 50 per cent in the past decade, says Krav Maga school owner Adam Gulla.

Real world statistics aside, pop culture has also had a huge influence for its rise in recent years. Several films such as the Jason Bourne series and Casino Royale have turned to the brutally efficient Krav Maga to be used during fight sequences. Whether it’s a martial arts film or not, adding Krav Maga to a fight sequence sets a thrilling tone and have undeniably piqued peoples’ interest to take up lessons for themselves.

"Recent events or personal experience make people evaluate their safety," Mr Gulla said. "That's no doubt a motivating factor for folks to take up self-defence. We're lucky to live in a safe country, but violence occurs. You can't carry on with the attitude that it won't happen to me," he added.

Krav Maga is the most distinct of all the modern martial art forms, and in many ways may not even be considered a ‘martial art’ at all. It is exploding in popularity across Australia (and the world, favored over other martial arts because of its usefulness in real-life situations. Krav Maga is a modern, practical and proven system of self-defence for today’s volatile world. So much more than a traditional martial art. Krav Maga is your insurance policy against the unknown. There is also a great emphasis on physical and mental wellbeing, fitness, strength and self-confidence, making it great for all ages, genders and fitness levels.
