Tick Survey on the Northern Beaches

Northern Beaches Council invites residents to participate in an online survey about their experiences with animals and ticks around the house.

The survey is part of a research project conducted by the University of Sydney which aims to better understand how residents encounter ticks on the Northern Beaches.

Mayor Michael Regan said the research, which is partly funded by savings identified as a result of Council’s Merger, had an important public benefit.

“Your responses will help in developing our understanding of ticks in the urban environment and will be important in helping Northern Beaches Council consider tick management options.

“The research will give us greater insight into what wildlife might be visiting residents' yards and what wildlife, backyard features or activities might influence whether people encounter ticks or not.”

Ticks are commonly encountered across the Northern Beaches, but are more troublesome after periods of warm and humid weather.

It is best to eliminate a tick where it is attached and then remove it, rather than trying to remove a tick while it is still alive. This is because they can become agitated upon removal and may inject more toxins via their saliva.
