Nestled in the same cove where Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku famously introduced Australians to surfing for the first time more than a century ago, Harbord Diggers are preparing to host their own salute to the sport for International Surfing Day on Thursday 20 June.

A celebration of the art and stoke of surfing, and indeed the day in 1914 when Kahanamoku paddled out into the Freshwater surf and returned to the shore standing upright on a long, wooden board, the day will kick off with a morning surf at Freshie beach before enjoying a coffee at the Diggers from 9am.

From there, those present can participate in a beach clean before ending the day with a BBQ plate, beers and live music at the Diggers.

The day, which is proudly supported by The Surfrider Foundation, will also feature a surfboard display from the country’s oldest manufacturers, Bennett’s, and will showcase the 2019 Nikon Surf Photo Finalists of the Year in a pictorial display throughout the venue.

There will be surfing films from Big Wave Surfing filmmaker Tim Bonython on the big screen in the Banksia Lounge.

“The Northern Beaches has a very proud and esteemed history of surfing and we’re thrilled to be celebrating that history through this event,” said Harbord Diggers General Manager, Michael Phillips.

“Duke Kahanamoku was a pioneer - he dramatically changed Australian culture when he introduced surfboard riding to Australians. It’s fitting that a statue commemorates him on the Freshwater headland and it’s fitting that we commemorate that day when we celebrate all things surfing.”

In keeping with Harbord Diggers desire to be a sustainable, environmentally conscious venue, the first 50 people to arrive for coffee on Thursday morning will receive a free Keep Cup, and the first 50 down on the sand helping to clean the beach will be offered a reusable drink container.

Each of these decisions and other sustainable activities through the venue were made to help aid the Diggers quest to meet the criteria to become an ‘ocean friendly venue’ recognised by The Surfrider Foundation – a feat which would make the Diggers one of the largest hospitality venues in Australia with that accreditation.

“Harbord Diggers is always looking for ways to remain eco-friendly and this initiative lays testament to that,” Mr Phillips said.

“In addition, we are currently working toward achieving all six essential criteria so we can be a Surfrider Foundation authorised ocean friendly venue which includes eliminating all single use plastic and polystyrene, providing eco-friendly takeaway cutlery and endorsing proper recycling practices.

“We would really like to see surfing enthusiasts of all ages turn out for what we’re sure will be a great day to celebrate this tradition on the Northern Beaches,” he concluded.
