Market to Beaches Northern Beaches Icon Relaunches as Foodie Playground.

Need Glacier 51 toothfish, black truffle butter, lasagne arancini or a ripe avocado? Northern Beaches’ iconic Forestway Fresh has relaunched as a destination for ‘hard to find’ gourmet goods from markets and boutique suppliers to deliver a produce, boutique grocery and a café experience for die-hard foodies, all driven by a ‘not so traditional’ Italian family at the helm.

In its iconic location at the gateway to the Northern Beaches in Terry Hills, father Domenic Polistina and sons Pasquale and Tony have transformed Forestway from a derelict fruit and vegetable shop in a tin shed to one of the largest foodie havens of its kind in Sydney.

The Polistina family have brought a taste of their authentic Southern Italian heritage to the store with home-made lasagne, Italian meatballs and truffle basil pesto filling the shelves prepared in-house by top Sydney chef Brad Wilson. Wilson’s decorated career spans QT Sydney, Rydges and iconic venues in Dubai, with country leaders Malcolm Turnbull and Kevin Rudd among his lucky diners.

The journey starts with a four-year-old Domenic Polistina moving from humble beginnings in Calabria, at the Southern tip of the ‘Boot of Italy’ to Australia. He reminisces about leasing what was once farmland in Sydney’s Menai, Moorebank and Fairfield and growing vegetables to make extra money on the weekends with his father. A young Domenic struggled with fitting into Australian school life and culture.

“The other kids made fun of my rustic home-made bread sandwiches with marinated eggplant and tomato while they chomped on white store bread with peanut butter or sprinkles. I remember asking my mother to try make our beautiful home-made bread look more like the terrible white store bread to help fit in,” he said.

Polistina went on to buy and sell fruit and vegetable shops around Sydney, organically educating his sons on fresh produce and retail.

Today, son Tony visits the markets every morning at 2.30am to scour, negotiate and occasionally fight, for the best quality to bring back to Forestway Fresh.

“We get what other retailers can’t because of our close relationships with farmers. They know for me only the freshest and best quality will do, so I get the best seasonal produce as it’s what our clientele has come to expect,” said Tony.

Son Pasquale takes a similar approach with the grocery division with over a 200 boutique suppliers and a mission to source what other retailers can’t.

“We have a range of products like no other in Sydney. If you want caviar, we’ve got both lumpfish and trout varieties, if you want hot sauce, we’ve got aisle dedicated to the firey, mild, tomatoey and most delicious sauces. Our store is by our family of foodies for foodies,” Pasquale said.

And it’s not just about the products, the Polistina family is vigilant about creating a pristine shopping experience where every product has its place and shoppers are welcomed with Southern Italian charm and hospitality.

As a true shopping destination, the venue also holds The Tasting Deck, a café within the store which makes a perfect pit-stop and way to sample the store’s fresh produce in action, plus a kids play area to keep the little ones entertained.

Forestway Fresh is located 2 Myoora Rd, Terrey Hills and is open 7am – 6pm, seven days a week.
