This is exhibition is built around all the objects that inhabit the continually shifting zone between land and sea. The littoral zone is the focus for so much of our Australian way of life and many of our activities from boating to fishing to swimming and picnics. The shoreline is also where the vagaries of the winds, waves, tides and currents join together to concentrate the detritus of human habitation.

Beachcombing is perhaps one of the oldest pastimes. Who hasn’t as a child spent hours scouring the rock pools or beach, catching crabs, collecting shells or standing next to your father while he casts a fishing rod into the waves. Time spent marvelling at the beauty and strangeness of all the animals and objects the sea constantly offers up.

These collages and carvings are made almost entirely from found objects.

The components have been collected over almost three decades from three continents, six islands and hundreds of beaches. The sources stretch from the old French settlement at Akaroa in New Zealand, along the beaches of Monterey in California, an old timber cutters camp in the Whitsunday Islands, the old Pearl Luggers Port in Broome, and to the island of Corfu.

Each object no matter how large or small starts with questions:
“This is only an old piece of wood, but if you close your eyes a little what do you see?”
“Does this object have an intrinsic beauty or value?”
“Is there something unusual or different about this object and could it contribute to make a greater whole?”
“Then lastly, now what can I do with this?”

Many times the answer is, I don’t know just now, but I really like the object, just for what it is, the colour or the pattern that it contains. The pieces lie apparently neglected, but really carefully stored, awaiting inspiration in some form to take hold. Then an idea or concept slowly evolves. This may take months or years or decades.
What is beauty and what is art? These unique, eclectic collages and sculptures explore the links between life, death, beauty and decay.
