Sydney Wind Symphony is proud to present in collaboration with Queenwood a special concert program showcasing soloist Claire Edwardes on Marimba, Australian composers and wind ensemble music in Australia.
Dare to Declare Concerto for Marimba by Anne Cawrse was premiered by Claire Edwardes in July 2023 with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and will be performed for the first time with wind ensemble.
Acclaimed guest soloist, Claire Edwardes OAM praised as a “sorceress of percussion” by The Canberra Times is passionate about all things percussive, and is an advocate for commissioning repertoire to share musical diversity with audiences of all ages and background.
The concert program gives voice to compositions by emerging Australian artists Christine Pan and Eleanor Brimblecombe alongside a line-up of Australian compositions including Matthew Hindson’s rhythmically driving ‘Requiem for a City’, Jodie Blackshaw’s ‘The Blessing of Light’ from her Symphony No 1 and Percy Grainger’s melodious depiction of the Australian countryside in ‘Colonial Song’.
Acclaim for Dare to Declare
“The work gains its subtitle from three Australian arts figures who inspired its movements: poet Oodgeroo Noonuccal, painter Clarice Beckett and composer Peggy Glanville-Hicks. Add another female champion to the list, because marimbist Claire Edwardes, the concerto’s dedicatee, is a luminary in her field too. Darting from one end of the 2.6m- wide instrument to the other, she dazzled with energy and authority. ”- In Review (Dare to Declare, ASO)
