History

So named after the confidence and ‘manly behaviour’ displayed by a group of local Aborigines spied in Manly Cove by Australia’s first Governor, Captain Arthur Phillip in 1788,  Manly has been attracting locals and visitors to its breathtaking shores for hundreds of years.

Celebrated as Australia’s first resort destination, see indigenous rock art and engravings along North Head or more modern historical landmarks like Manly’s Quarantine Station first used in the 1830’s. Walk the path of Olympians for 100 years of Manly champions or stroll the famous Corso built in 1855 as a link between Sydney Harbour and the Pacific Ocean.

  • Manly hosts its own dawn service on Anzac Day (25 April) and citizenship ceremony on Australia Day (26 January).
  • More than 10,000 people gather at North Head each Boxing Day to watch the start of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.
  • Whilst there is still some debate, Manly is believed to be the site of the world’s first Surf Life Saving Club.
  • In 1902, William Gocher broke the law at Manly Beach by swimming during daylight hours. The first official bathing season was declared in 1903.
